Bowood House is the magnificent family home of the Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne and was designed by Robert Adam in the 18th Century. On display in the exhibition rooms upstairs is a remarkable collection of family heirlooms built up over 250 years. These include Victoriana, Indiana, silver, porcelain, fine paintings and watercolours. Interesting rooms include Robert Adams famous Library, Dr Joseph Priestleys Laboratory where he discovered oxygen gas, and the Chapel. This Wiltshire stately home stands in one of Capability Browns most beautiful parks with gently sloping lawns stretching away from the House to the lake beyond. Splendours within the 100 acre park include a 40 acre lake, the Cascade Waterfall, Doric Temple, arboretum, pinetum and terraced rose garden. For children under 12, Bowood offers a truly outstanding Adventure Playground. There is also a separate garden of 50 acres of spectacular rhododendron walks open mid April to early June.
