Painshill, contemporary with Stourhead and Stowe, is one of Europe's finest eighteenth century landscape gardens. It was created by the Hon. Charles Hamilton, plantsman, painter and brilliantly gifted designer, between 1738 and 1773. He transformed barren heathland into ornamental pleasure grounds and parkland of dramatic beauty and contrasting scenery, dominated by a fourteen acre serpentine lake fed from the river by an immense waterwheel.
