The manor, which dates to Norman times, is now the home of an internationally renowned herb garden, craft centre, restaurant and specialist plant centre. There are guided tours of the manor house and this year sees the launch of the manors latest venture, an Agricultural and Carriage Museum. Nearby, in the manors early nineteenth century courtyard, self catering holiday accommodation is available.
The gardens 14 acres in all were created by Sir James Knott in the late 1920s who imported thousands of plants from all over the world and limestone from the north of England to build the rockeries. In recent years many areas have been restored and replanted. In addition to the Herb Garden, the Rose and Lavender Garden, Shade Garden, Japanese Garden and Water/Rock Garden are of particular interest.
