Thirlestane Castle

Thirlestane Castle, one of the seven 'Great Houses of Scotland', lies off the A68 at Lauder 28 miles south of Edinburgh. The ancient seat of the Earls and Duke of Lauderdale, it is still the Maitland family home. Thirlestane's origins are in the 13th century, but it was rebuilt in 1590 and extended in 1670 and in 1840. It has exquisite plasterwork ceilings of the 1670s, fine pictures, furniture and a large collection of historic toys. The old kitchens, pantries, laundries and country life exhibitions conclude a castle tour. Facilities include a gift shop, tea-room, woodland picnic tables, adventure playground, audio-visual and free parking.
