A fascinating and hitherto unknown and forgotten Victorian garden on the brink of oblivion is now the subject of a unique and loving garden restoration. Located in North Devon, in the SW of England, Winsford Walled Garden can trace the family of the original owners to 1755, friends of whom include US President Theodore Roosevelt. Just a half-hour drive south of the Royal Horticultural Society Garden at Rosemoor or fifteen minutes north of Okehampton (A30) and one hour from the Eden Project in Cornwall The garden formed part of a large country estate and contains a number of unique features which show Victorian horticultural ingenuity and workmanship at its very best. Work began around 1883 and by the time it was completed Winsford could boast over 500 linear feet of state-of-the-art greenhouses. Compared with the 1000 linear feet of greenhouses by the same engineers for Queen Victoria's own kitchen garden at Windsor at 32 times the size and you will appreciate there is a lot less walking at Winsford!
